Six hospitals led by ACHE Members and Fellows were among 103 organizations worldwide recently recognized by the International Hospital Federation’s Beyond the Call of Duty for COVID-19 Program.
IHF selected the winners for the exceptional service they provided in response to the pandemic. Following a call for entries this summer, an international review committee consisting of 16 industry experts from the healthcare field chose 103 hospitals and healthcare systems from 28 countries to be recognized for going “beyond the call of duty.”
These organizations, which include 13 hospitals and health systems from the United States, demonstrated “initiative, agility, and an incredible capacity to innovate under extraordinary circumstances,” according to a Dec. 15 IHF press release.
The six organizations chosen for recognition that are led by ACHE Members and Fellows are:
- Advocate Aurora Health, Downers Grove, Ill., led by Jim H. Skogsbergh, FACHE, president/CEO
- Bristol (Conn.) Hospital Inc., led by Kurt A. Barwis, FACHE, president/CEO/CFO, and an ACHE Governor
- Cone Health, Greensboro, N.C., led by Terrance “Terry” B. Akin, FACHE, CEO
- North Oaks Health System, Hammond, La., led by Michele K. Sutton, FACHE, president/CEO, and an ACHE Governor
- Norwegian American Hospital, Chicago, led by José R. Sánchez, president/CEO, an ACHE Member
- Trinity Health, Livonia, Mich., led by Michael A. Slubowski, FACHE, president/CEO
As part of the recognition program, IHF has featured the stories of select hospitals, including Northwell Health, New Hyde Park, N.Y., in a special feature. Additionally, IHF designated Dec. 15 as a global day of awareness for the selfless dedication of all hospitals and healthcare providers in their fight against COVID-19.
